Things to do in Newport County June 9

Nov 12, 2023

Sometimes it's easy to skip going to a local attraction that may be considered mostly for tourists, but this is the weekend to forget that sentiment.

For the first time since 2019, Newport County residents and employees of the hospitality industry are invited to visit 16 participating attractions in Newport and Bristol Counties, with many offering free admission or discounts. That means there's an opportunity to stay busy all weekend long.

But that's not all that's happening across Newport County.

An opportunity to bike, walk to venture on Ocean Drive without cars happens Saturday, along with artists talks and one of the island's largest yard sales.

Check out these weekend events and start making your plans.

Bike Newport's free community event for biking and walking on Newport's famous Ocean Loop, will feature more than three miles of "Open Road" – a family-friendly coastal roadway without any cars. The event will occur Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Elliot's Ride for Everyone honors the life and passion of Dr. Elliot Kaminitz – a much-loved community member who lost his life while biking on Memorial Blvd in 2012. Elliot wanted everyone to experience the joy of bicycling.

All are welcome, every age, every mobility, every kind of cyclist, hiker, roller and stroller.

The event begins at 8:45 a.m. with an official welcome in front of Rogers High School, 15 Wickham Road in Newport. Bike parking, light refreshments, and bathroom facilities are available.

Participants may enter and exit the route on bicycle or foot from any point – including the three endpoints of Rogers High School, Ocean Avenue at Carroll, and Ocean Avenue at Harrison. In addition to Rogers High School, participants may park at Brenton Point State Park. A protected bicycle corridor will be from the Brenton Point parking lot to the beginning of the Open Road at Ocean/Harrison and a path from the main Rogers parking lot on Old Fort Road to the front of the building where the opening occurs.
